Jessup Cellars Juel

A Blend Rooted in Heritage, Patience, and Joy

Pronounced “Yool,” Juel is Norwegian for “joy.” The wine was named by Jessup Cellars owner Becky Blue in honor of her father, Juel S. Johnson—a lifelong South Dakota farmer whose commitment to family, community, and doing things the right way continues to inspire every vintage. Silky, expressive, and thoughtfully crafted, Juel offers a distinctive interpretation of Merlot and the complexity it can achieve in the cool climate of Los Carneros..

What Is Juel?

Juel is a Merlot-led red blend that showcases the balance, depth, and elegance of cool-climate fruit. Introduced in 2006, the wine was created during a time when many producers were turning away from Merlot in favor of more fashionable varieties. Jessup Cellars chose a different path: trust the vineyard, focus on quality, and create a wine with lasting character. Expect a wine that is:
  • Silky and expressive
  • Richly layered
  • Balanced and structured
  • Elegant rather than overpowering
  • Crafted to complement food and conversation

While the supporting varietals may change with each harvest, Merlot remains at the heart of Juel.

The Story Behind the Name

Born in 1923, Juel spent his life farming his family’s homestead in Norway Township, South Dakota. He began working the land alongside his father after graduating from high school and remained deeply connected to agriculture throughout his life.

His service extended well beyond the family farm. Juel served on local school boards, participated actively in his church and community, and represented South Dakota’s 9th District in the State Legislature from 1983 to 1992.

The name Juel—Norwegian for “joy”—reflects the quiet satisfaction found in purposeful work, strong family relationships, and a life rooted in the land.
This wine connects two agricultural traditions: the farms of South Dakota and the vineyards of Napa Valley. Both depend on patience, respect for the land, and the understanding that meaningful things cannot be rushed.

Perfect Food Pairings
