Opening July 25, 2025 | Curated by Julie Eppich of Eppich Arts
This summer, Jessup Cellars invites you to experience a powerful new installation exploring the intersection of culture, memory, and artistic form. Opening July 25, Perspectives in Culture by photographer Reid Yalom and Juxtaposition of Clay by ceramic sculptor Emil Yanos offers a striking, cross-disciplinary dialogue housed within the gallery walls of our Yountville tasting room.
A Global Lens and an Earthbound Form
Though working in different media, Yalom and Yanos share a dedication to storytelling—one through the camera, the other through clay. Their collaboration reflects the human impulse to create, connect, and preserve what we see and feel.
Reid Samuel Yalom, a Northern California photographer with over 30 years of international work, brings a collection of photographs taken across Romania, Mexico, Vietnam, Greece, and the American West. His lens captures the quiet tension between past and present, offering intimate glimpses of people and places that speak across borders. Whether documenting the Black Sea coastline or rural cemeteries, Yalom’s work reveals a sensitivity to history and a deepening understanding of the cultures he explores.
His published monographs—Colonial Noir (Mexico), One Foot in Romania, and The American Resting Place—trace his evolution as a visual historian. His upcoming work, The Professors’ Son, an autobiographical journey in images and prose, is due this fall.
Emil Yanos, a ceramic artist born and raised in Honolulu, creates sculptural forms that echo natural elements and emotional memory. With a background in both floral and graphic design, Yanos uses the tactility of clay to explore the emotional weight of texture and color. His works feel ancient and immediate at once—organic sculptures that seem to rise from the earth itself. His process involves stretching, pulling, and layering color to emphasize the raw beauty of his material. Like his floral arrangements, which resemble blooming sculptures, Yanos’ ceramics are visual meditations on balance and transformation.
Together, Yalom and Yanos offer a conversation in contrasts: light and form, permanence and impermanence, narrative and abstraction. Their works meet in the middle—bridging disciplines and geographies to invite reflection on what we carry, where we’ve been, and how we see.
