AVIGNON

Our Rhone cruise spends a full day in Avignon, once referred to as “The City of Popes”. Nine popes resided here from 1309 to 1377, during a period of turmoil in Rome. Avignon is one of the few French cities to have preserved its ramparts, old city center and the ancient bridge across the Rhone.  The city is now classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The bridge at Avignon is especially beautiful; a favorite photography subject at sunset from the ship’s Observation Deck. The Bridge at Avignon is also a favorite French children’s song about dancing.

Nearby Avignon is the notable ancient Roman aqueduct that crosses the Gard River, called rightly enough the Pont du Gard.  This bridge is part of a 31 mile long aqueduct system, built by the Romans in the 1st Century, which has puzzled modern day engineers until very recently.  Believe it or not, for decades French engineers were stumped how the Romans made it work!  The Pont du Gard has three tiers of arches and in its day carried 44 million gallons of water a day to the fountains, baths and homes of the citizens of Nimes. Today the Pont du Gard is one of the most popular tourist attractions in France.

TIP: Pack your swimsuit and bring neoprene “reefwalkers” to swim in the cool clear river pools, to stay comfortable walking the stony river banks and bottom.

There is an optional 3-night post-cruise tour of Provence March 26-29, 2020.  We stay 3 nights in Aix-en-Provence, one of the most interesting and charming small cities in France. Visit the Camargue Delta, the stunning village of “Aix” and spend a day at Chateau La Verrerie in the foothills of the French Alps, including participation in a wine blending class.

Provence in the spring is cool and uncrowded.  Airfares are low.  All meals, wine and sightseeing tours are included aboard AmaCello. Our discount is $500 per cabin ($250 per person) is valid until May 31st.  A $500 p/p deposit will hold your cabin.
